Goodbye Sonia Rykiel

One of my favorite designers!

French fashion designer Sonia Rykiel has passed away at the age of 86. Founder of the eponymous Parisian fashion label Sonia Rykiel. She died on today after a long battle with Parkinson, her daughter revealed to AFP.

“My mother died at 5:00 this morning at her home in Paris from the effects of Parkinson’s,” Nathalie Rykiel said to AFP. The designer had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for the past 19 year.

“First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn’t like anyone else’s.” Sonia Rykiel

Although the designer looked increasingly frail when seen in public, at the time not many knew she was suffering from the illness. Rykiel previously sought to keep it a secret for as long as possible before coming forward after noticeable symptons, such as uncontrollable trembling. “I don’t want to show my pain. I resisted, I hesitated, I tried to be invisible, to pretend that nothing was wrong. It’s impossible, it’s not like me,” she wrote in her book, which was co-authored by Judith Perrignon.

Sonia Rykiel was one of my favorite designers. Her own look was so outspoken! I even have been to her shows twice! And I saw her in real at the end of her show in Paris. I remembered it was so special. Seeing her in real. Sonia, you were a woman who dared to be noticed. A woman who looked so special! The most incredible thing I noticed during the runways. Your models were laughing the whole time. And that was your signature. Show models who are smiling…

You made great clothes. A lot of the knits are ‘inbetweenie proof’. I remembered the Sonia X H&M collection. I was at the shop to score some items. But all the items were so small, it only went up to size M. But I still have a bag, bought in NYC at Macy’s, I will carry it these days to honor you.
Bye Sonia….

A great quote from her:
“It’s not true that clothes look better on skinny girls, what counts is the attitude”.
