Unfair representations of ‘real women’

A great body and shape survey by Curvissa…

On Curvissa a great survey about curvy, plus size and more. Here are the results!
Average UK dress size: Size 44Eu, 14 US and in the Netherlands it’s 57% of women older than 18 years a size 42 Eu, 12 US.

Average high-street mannequin size: Size 36/38 EU, 6/8 US.

So it’s no wonder that:
81% of women find mannequins are unfair representations of real women.
68% of women feel in-store promotions don’t feature true representations of real women.

Where Do We Get Our Fashion Inspiration?
Magazines and television are key influencers, but…

87% of women feel that those featured in the media don’t reflect the average woman in the UK.
They are:
• Too thin
• Too airbrushed
• Too glamourised

It doesn’t seem to be getting better…
57% of women feel a woman’s shape is less accurately represented in the fashion media today than it was 10 years ago.

Which Women Most Inspire Us?
It seems everyday women, friends, family and working mums are considered most inspirational.

Perhaps that’s why…
65% of women would like to see more inspirational women representing clothing brands in fashion media today.

And this is why plus size bloggers are so popular and inspiring. That’s a big change in fashion! Every woman, in every size and her own style and show it to the world!

“I’ve never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines. I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.”
Adele (Singer-songwriter)

“I finally realised that being grateful to my body, whatever shape it was in, was key to giving more love to myself.”
Oprah Winfrey (Media proprietor and former talk show host)
