I interviewed Soozie Jenkinson, Head of Lingerie Design, Marks & Spencer and Paschal Little, Head of Lingerie Technology, Marks & Spencer about the lingerie collection, the style, the sizes, the shapes and the big changes…
Lingerie from size 36 EU to 50 EU, for how long you are having this size range?
We are constantly reviewing our size offer and we have one of the broadest size ranges on the high street with 131 different sizes across our total range. We launched our DD- G size range over 10 years ago and we now offer sizes from 28AA to 44K which customers can shop in store or online at www.marksandspencer.nl
Do you see a big change last years? Do women become larger?
And are these changes only the bra or also the bottoms?
We do see variations in sizing but it’s a very gradual change. The current most common bra size is a 36C which has increased from a 34B 10 years ago. Size 12 knickers is the most popular knicker size.
Do you see differences in countries? Do women in the UK buy different things than Dutch of Spanish women? And how do you do research?
We see similar products are popular across all the areas we trade. Our Rosie for Autograph range is very popular and we look forward to launching this collection in store in the Netherlands for the first time on the 20th February in The Hague. Our reputation for innovative shapewear means these garments prove very successful in a variety of territories, in countries such as India we are one of the few retailers offering these unique and innovative pieces. In terms of research for ranges, we design and develop with global trends and influences in mind. Collections are designed centrally from our Head Office in London and we take inspiration from a range of sources including trade fairs, and lifestyle trends. We work together with some of the best lace, embroidery and fabric companies in the world to develop our exclusive ranges and of course look at what has sold well and what our customers tells us they want.
What are the most popular shape bottoms?
The Brazilian shape, which is low rise and has a cheeky cut on the bottom and is designed to be smooth under clothing is our most popular fashion knicker.
Why is it still hard to make strapless bras for larger cups?
This is a challenge that can be overcome and we offer a range of bras that are suitable for larger cup sizes. There are three key things to consider when designing for larger sizes- they need a supportive and uplifted cup so a firm foam padded cup is best, we use a special wire shape to give better support . To ensure the back of the bra stays firmly in position to help keep the cups in place without the straps, ‘stay in place’ elastics are used. Added structure in the wing can give extra side support in the back of the bra and give the extra peace of mind for keeping the cups in place and stopping the bra from slipping down on the body.
You have chosen for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is it possible to see Christina Hendricks or a very gorgeous top plus size model like Robyn Lawley, in your next campaign?
Rosie is the co-designer and model of the Rosie for Autograph Collection and works together with Soozie Jenkinson M&S Head of Design and her team to create the vintage inspired collection. The collection is inclusive as it includes bras up to a G cup within the range. We constantly review the models we select and use a range of models to showcase the different ranges and brands we offer.
Beside gorgeous sexy sets, shape wear is a must have now-a-days. Do you sell a lot of shapewear? And what are the most popular items?
We are renowned for our market leading shapewear and hosiery ranges and continue to add new innovations to our offer. Some of our best selling shapewear pieces include Secret Support Tights which shape hips, thighs and bums and flatten tummies, Firm Control no VPL knickers which flatten tummies but with no tell tale VPL and the Waist Sculpt Wear Your Own Bra Slip, a new cupless slip that gives an hourglass shape and is available in beautiful overlaid lace.
